- Estates-General convene at Versailles
- Third Estate declares itself the National Assembly
- Locked out of the meeting room, the National Assembly swore to not leave Versailles and swore not to leave until a constitution is granted
- The National Assembly appoints a committee of thirty members to draft a constitution.
- The National Assembly proclaims itself the Constituent National Assembly, with full authority and power to decree laws; their primary
- task is to draw up and adopt a constitution.
- The National Assembly adopts the Declaration of the Rights of Man.
- Louis XVI and his family are arrested while trying to flee from France
- France declares war on Austria and leads to economic depression
- Radical parties emerge. Jacobins, led by Robespierre, formed the Committee of Public Safety, which assumed dictatorial powers and attempted the radical transformation of French society.
- Trial of Louis XVI begins.
- Louis XVI is sentenced to the guillotine.
Summer 1793
- Sponsored by the sans-cullottes, Robespierre and the Committee carried out a Reign of Terror, searching for counterrevolutionaries and traitors.
July 1794
- Coup d'état within the committee overthrows Robespierre, who is guillotined and ended the rule of the committee.
1794-1799
- Emergence of the French directory, a more moderate government that attempted to restore order after the chaos of the Terror. It was unpopular, and was overthrown in 1799
- Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and the end of the French Revolution
